Super Sized

Our friend requested unfrosted cupcakes for the kids at her daughter's birthday party, so every one could decorate her own... For the adults, we made this GIGANTIC cupcake (four layers of chocolate cake and two huge batches of buttercream frosting). The finishing touches of sprinkles and a marzipan cherry really add to the final look.

The Kids Join the Action

You can imagine how hard it is for our two 4 year olds to watch us make all these cakes that are not for them. Especially since they think everything in the world revolves around them. So this time around, we piled all the scraps on a big plate, gave them each a bowl of frosting and set out a billion kinds of sprinkles. Needless to say, they had a ball...

Queen of Hearts

Phew. This was a challenge... Amazing that it came out so well in the end after part of the cake fell apart, 4 pounds of frosting had to be dumped (don't even ASK about the microwave experiment!), and a flashlight got dropped on it. All worth it to help a very special 90-year-old bridge player celebrate her birthday!

The Wilton Way

We are taking a cake decorating class, sponsored by Wilton (a HUGE cake decorating supply company). Tonight's class required us to practice these itty, bitty stars in insane quantities. When you see a whole teddy bear cake covered with them, it kind of makes you want to throw up. But I have to admit, I ended up liking the outcome here. Chocolate cake with strawberry filling and vanilla buttercream frosting. Hence, the neopolitan ice cream sandwich.

Hello Pink, I mean Kitty

It's good that one of us has a girl and one of us has a boy. It makes us more prepared for any request that comes our way. Can you guess which one of us already had pink frosting gel in the cabinet? But even this mom who has NO pink in her house finds this Hello Kitty cake unexpectedly appealing!

Happy 60th

Lots of swirls and lots of fun colors in these cupcakes for a 60th birthday party. We know we've reached a new point in our business when we're bringing "the goods" to a customer in a hotel parking lot for delivery! I guess next we'll be wearing disguises. :)

Spooooooky!

Getting into the spirit of Halloween...

A VERY specific request!

"I want a white whale with a pink bow and a pink leash and pink ribbon around the cake and sparkles. Oh, and I want it to look blue so you can tell the whale is swimming in blue water." Coming right up!

Well Balanced Cupcakes

Delicious (and really pretty, if we may say so ourselves) green tea cupcakes with green tea cream cheese frosting! Not a bad way to wrap up a work meeting the day after your birthday...

Fairy cake

Lucky girl, got the super-pink fairy cake all to herself. She ate all around the edges, keeping her fairy safe! We also made cupcakes for the rest of the guests...

Halloween Train cake

Our first attempt at a train cake... Several challenges-- including sloped cake, thin frosting and the angle of the cars. But the "coal" car, pumpkin car, pond and duck/cat help to pull it all together. And just when we were feeling that it wasn't our best work, my 4 1/2 year old came into the room and said, "Mommy, it's PERFECT!" Just what we needed to hear!

Hammer time!

This fun cake is made for a birthday girl who just bought a fixer-upper... The nails are made of fondant.

Scrapbook

This cake is made for a scrapbooker... Her own photos were printed with food coloring "ink" on rice paper and then placed on the cake.

Next came the best one yet!!

We are so in love with these cakes. The first and second photos show the garden cakes we made for an avid gardener's birthday-- a small one to share with family and a larger one to share with co-workers. The third photo shows a cake made for someone who requested a simple carrot cake... But the little marzipan veggies are just too addictive!

Dandelion Nursery School

Heading back to school, we made this cake for a parent meeting at the cooperative nursery school that our kids attend.

Linux penguin on American Idol

It's a long story!!

Our first cake as a team!

After admitting to ourselves that we actually love doing this, we spread the word to our kids' preschool community. The first request we got was for a guitar cake for a 7-year-old's rock and roll birthday party. Here's what we came up with...
